As you probably know, this year we are not throwing our annual Laurelhurst Auction. Given the extreme time commitment for an Auction, we are giving our volunteers a break and coming up with new fundraising ideas.

One of these new ideas was to raise our direct appeal to a new level.  With your help, we succeeded with an unprecedented special appeal that raised over $62,000!  Thank you all for your wonderful generosity.

Once again Portland Public School is faced with a $27 million budget cut for next school year.  The money the Laurelhurst Foundation raises will be necessary in order to maintain our level of staffing and academic excellence in 2012-2013.

Remember, our PTA helps pay for the “stuff” our kids need and the Foundation helps pay for “the staffing” of our programs (i.e. teacher assistants, library, art, PE, and technology).

Our Goal is to match last year’s fundraising without an Auction

We already have $62,500 under our belts.  If our community can once again “pull together” and raise another $60,000, the total Foundation contributions will equal last year’s combined efforts from the Auction and Appeal!  So how do we do it and have a party at the same time?

House Parties

A family from each grade-level has already committed to host a parent-only party on March 3, 2012, from 7 pm to 10 pm.  The host family will provide their home, beer & wine, soft drinks and appetizers.

Parents can go from one party to another if they have more than one child at Laurelhurst, or commit to one house and relax.  The end result should be a really fun night of socializing.  You can stop by for 20 minutes or stay the whole night!  All of our teachers will be invited (for free) to their grade-level party. Ms. Pinder and Ms. Osterhagen have committed to “party-hop” from one party to the next and observe the fundraising mayhem!

A ticket to the house party pallooza will cost $20 per person (one ticket covers all parties).  The hope is that you have so much fun on your night out that you write a check to the Foundation and help us raise $60,000 across the Laurelhurst neighborhood.  Remember, without the costs of putting on an Auction, 100% of the proceeds go straight to the Foundation.  Take an example.  One of our grade levels has 3 classrooms of about 25 kids each.  If each family attends a house party at that grade level and writes a check for $100 we will raise $7,500 at that party.  If you multiply that by 7 or 8 other parties, we will meet our goal.  Some will give less and some will give more.  If we all give something, we will get there!

We are overwhelmed by the response to the Laurelhurst Foundation Direct Appeal. Our goal was to raise $50,000 in just under three weeks. In actuality, our community raised $62,500 from 218 families in that time period! And more families than ever before chose to donate. That’s a record setting Direct Appeal, and we are so thankful for the generosity of our parents  and for our community for sustaining an excellent education for our students.

A special thank you to our direct appeal champions and fellow fundraisers: David Bailey (graphic design), Mairi Burns and Linda Crocker (marketing), Steve Fox (direct calling), Young Mitowski (foundation logistics), Jennie Thede (copywriting) and Dan Wasil (fundraising). Congratulations to the Breslau Family (Lucca – Gr 7) who won the drawing for the “Experience Oregon” getaway package.

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! We hope you had a wonderful time with family and friends. You’ve probably noticed some new posters around the school asking us all to “Help Save Our Amazing Programs at Laurelhurst”.

The Annual Direct Appeal campaign has kicked-off and our fund raising goals this year are bigger than ever. We’ve identified a $130,000 gap in funds for the 2011 – 2012 school year which in previous years has been generated by our annual Auction and Direct Appeals for giving. As of now, there is no Auction scheduled for this school year, making this Direct Appeal more important than ever!
